Paul Schürch

Paul Schürch was born in the USA, and after completing high school, moved to Switzerland with his family in order to study church organ building, marquetry, and furniture design, then continuing education in wooden boat building in the UK and stone mosaic inlay in Italy. After 12 years studying the crafts in Europe he returned to the USA to open his studio for designing and building fine marquetry furniture, and teaching his craft to others in various schools throughout USA and abroad.

The art of marquetry is the process of creating a design or image using the natural wood, metal, stone or shell. By framing it upon a uniquely designed display, it becomes finely crafted piece of furniture or art that shows off the true nature of these materials. The contrast of the different wood inlay colors, burning certain inlay edges for depth, and curving the artwork, makes it a dynamic art piece.

“The images, forms and shapes found in nature have always inspired and influenced my work, which is both an art, and a technique driven science. After producing over 500 pieces of art and fine furniture the challenge and journey remains the same for me - to achieve the best balance of design, imagery and materials to create finely made artistic objects that will last for centuries.”
